Upper mustang trekking 14 Days 1995

Tour overview

Upper Mustang is known as a mystique valley.The remote Trans-Himalayan mountain area with Tibetan influence culture which offers spectacular trekking experience. Upper mustang trek offer dominated by giants Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif. the Kali Gandaki river in northern central Nepal.Special trekking permits are required for the Upper Mustang Trek as it lies in a controlled and restricted region of Nepal. One will observe strong Tibetan cultural influence, as the ancient kingdom of Mustang (Lo Monthang) belonged to Tibet in ancient time.  One has to trek through an almost treeless barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down hills during the Upper Mustang Trek while enjoying panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other peaks. Trekkers will be able to observe Tibetan Buddhism and Bon Po during the Upper Mustang Trek. During the Upper Mustang Trek trekkers will observe centuries old culture, lifestyle and heritage. The department of immigration exercise strict controls when issuing permits to protect the culture from outside influence.


Our tour leader will be at the airport with our company logo. You will be transferred via chartered vehicle to your accommodation in Kathmandu. The journey from the airport takes approximately 30 minutes. You will be briefed on your accommodation, its surrounding areas and your tour.

Today after breakfast we start a guided tour to several of the most historical and spiritual attractions in Kathmandu. Some of these landmarks are considered as World Heritage Sites; including the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous 'Monkey Temple' (Swayambhunath) and Buddhists shrine (Bouddhanath) which is one of the large Stupas in the world. In the afternoon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where we can meet our trek leader and other team members

We have a 6 hour drive to Pokhara. Pokhara is a beautiful place and popular among tourist.

A 25 minute flight from pokhara takes us to Jomsom and we trek to Kagbeni which take approximately 5 hours. At 2810 m we walk along the Kali Gandaki river bank. It is one of the windiest areas in Nepal and the wind normally picks up after 10 am. Today we will walk against the wind and make our way to Kagbeni.

We trek for approximately 6½ hours at 2980 m. After Kagbeni we are in Upper Mustang which is our mission. We follow the Kali Gandaki river valley again as the landscape changes. We have a lunch break and continue to Chhusang.

The journey from Chhusang  from chele to Syanbuche takes approximately 7 hours at 3520 m. We have now reached the high altitude zone and we walk slowly while drinking lots of water. We are near the Kali Gandaki river bank. We stop for lunch and then head to Syanbuche.

We trek for approximately 5 hours today at 3520 m. Today we have a full view of the Himalayas. We have lunch and you have leisure time to explore Ghemi.

Today we walk for approximately 4½ hours at 3560 m. We climb up the hill to the Chharang Pass at 3900m then decent to Chharang. During the trek we have panoramic views of the mountains. We have lunch and visit the oldest monasteries.

Approximately 4 hours walk at 3810 m and we arrive at the ancient Kingdom of Mustang. Here we can see the King’s Palace and visit the king’s house. The following day we explore Lo Monthang.

Today our trek concludes with an 7 hour journey from tetang to kagbeni to Jomason. We are now at 2680 m. We celebrate the evening with our team.

An early morning flight to Pokhara and a 25 minute drive to our hotel in Jomsom where we will have lunch. In the afternoon we explore Fewa Lake and the rest of the afternoon you have at leisure.

The journey from Pokhara to bhaktapur and kathmandu takes approximately 6 hours. You will be taken to your accommodation in Kathmandu and your tour leader will meet you in the evening for a group dinner to conclude your last night in Nepal.

Tips for Trip

Essential Equipment:

1 pair strong, comfortable hiking boots

1 Medium/Large rucksack/ backpack 

(max weight when loaded & carried by porter- 15 kg.)

1 sleeping bag- down-filling to zero cent or lower depending on trip altitude

1 day pack: +/- 10 litters

1Down jacket or all –weather Anorak-long(not short) with hood

1 Warm wooly hat

Gloves- quality and warmth subject to altitude and season

Sun-glasses-essential above snow –line

Sun-block/ Sun –Screen lotion(30-50 SPF) –essential for light-skinned people

1 Fleece or warm sweater

1 Sweat –shirt/light sweater

Towel-cotton, medium

Torch/flash-light-with additional batteries

Shirts- long-sleeved, cotton and/ or thermal  Tshirts

Trousers-2 pairs( warm or light –weight depending on trek altitude)
