Itinerary

  • DAY 01: Arrive in Kathmandu (Altitude:1350m)?Our tour leader will be at the airport with our company’s logo. Once you will met the leader you will be warmly welcomed and will be transferred via chartered vehicle to the hotel in Kathmandu which will require approx. half an hour’s drive through roads and intricate streets. And after check-in at the hotel and refreshing, you will be briefed regarding your hotel, its surrounding areas and your wonderful tour itself.
    Included accommodation:Guest house in Thamel.
    Included meal:No
    Mode of transport : Chartered vehicle.
  • DAY 02: Fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar (altitude:81m/ 266 ft) ?You will fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar. Depending upon the availability of flying options to Suketar from Biratnagar you will be presented with either of the two possibilities listed below:
    a. If there is availability of flight to Suketar you spend the night in Biratnagar and fly to Suketar the next morning.
    b. If there are no flights available to Suketar you drive to Phidim and spend the night there.
  • DAY 03: Fly from Biratnagar to Suketar (altitude:2420m) or Drive from Phidim (altitude:1179m) to Suketar ?If you spent overnight at Biratnagar the previous day you will directly fly to Suketar this day and spend the night there. But, if you spent your night in Phidim you will be driving to Suketar. Either way you spend overnight at Suketar.
  • DAY 04: Trek from Suketar to Mitlung (altitude:921m) walking time approx 4/5 hrs ?We officially kick start the day with a downhill walk to Mitlung. The trails throughout the lower sections of the Kanchenjunga region pass through fertile valleys with beautiful pastures and small villages. We then cross Hangdewa River and walk alongside the raging Tamor River. As we gradually head in a northerly direction the trail steepens after a few hours before a final descent of 350 meters on a muddy trail to Mitlung. We spend the night there.
  • DAY 05: Trek from Mitlung to Chirwa (altitude:1270m) walking time approx 5/6 hrs ?The trail ascends and descends steadily as we make our way towards the village of Sinwa. We continue trekking downhill until we reach Tawa. At Tawa, we ascend to some heights and cross the suspension bridge at Thiwa. We pass beautiful rural landscape along the way and reach Chirwa, a beautiful Limbu village with few lodges, tea shops etc. We spend the night at Chirwa.
  • DAY 06: Trek from Chirwa to Sukathum (altitude:1576m) walking time approx 5/6 hrs ?The trek from Chirwa to Sukathum passes through varied landscapes such as cardamom fields and dense forests. We trek uphill for sometime then descend to the lush green fields below and continue trekking along the Tamor River passing through a dense forest. It’s both uphill and downhill trek until crossing the Ghunsa River after which we reach Sukathum and spend the night there.
  • DAY 07: Trek from Sukathum to Amjilosa (altitude:2308m) walking time  6/7 hrs ?Trekking from Sukathum to Amjilosa is challenging. After crossing the suspension bridge outside Sukathum we enter a dense forest, ascend the steep trail, descend and cross the river again. We also climb a gorge from the bottom and pass by Solima village and descend again to the level of the river. All in all, this day’s trekking is rather tough. Therefore, it is advisable to be very careful especially while walking the trail that passes the gorge. We later follow a tricky trail which goes both uphill and downhill until reaching Amjilosa where we spend the night.
  • DAY 08: Trek from Amjilosa to Gyabla (altitude:2730m) walking time approx 6/7 hrs ?We start trekking from the river bank, pass through a densely forest of bamboo, fir and rhododendrons eventually reaching a small stone house by the river. We then climb uphill crossing a few small bridges along the way. Here, we get to enjoy the company of stunning waterfalls that originate from the mountains. After yet another short uphill walk we reach the Tibetan settlement to Gyabla.
  • DAY 09: Trek from Gyabla to Ghunsa (altitude:3595m) walking time approx 5/6 hrs ?We descend down the river and notice the valley as it slowly opens up before reaching Phale, a Tibetan refugee settlement where it is possible to purchase handicrafts and homemade rugs from locals. After purchasing a few souvenirs we travel through conifer and pine forest and reach the Sherpa village of Ghunsa where we spend the night. This place is known for its hydroelectricity plant and the fact that more than 20 prominent conservationists met a tragic end in a helicopter crash.
  • DAY 10: Acclimatisation day at Ghunsa ?We take care to spend time acclimatising around Ghunsa before continuing our next day’s trek. We recommend you to stay active even in a rest day as it is better than being idle while on a trekking journey. Therefore, we take a short hike towards the Laspsan La monastery through the lush green forest. Come back to Ghunsa by afternoon and relax.
  • DAY 11: Trek from Ghunsa to Kambachen (altitude:4050m) walking time approx 5/6 hrs?From Ghunsa we trek further north along the river bank which presents us with magnificent mountain scenery. We pass through meadows full with beautiful wildflowers, rhododendron and pine forests. We cross a bridge at Rampuk Kharka, continue past the waterfall and cross the tricky section of the landslide. After crossing the landslide area we begin to see the spectacular view of Mt. Jannu. Further exploring and tackling the tricky mountain trail we finally arrive at Kambachen and spend the night.
  • DAY 12: Acclimatisation Day at Kambachen ?We take yet another day for acclimatisation at Kambachen which is reserved to accommodate participants in high altitude and also to observe if anybody in the group has any symptoms of altitude sickness. The overall idea for this day is to relax- take a bath and/or explore the Nuphchu Khola Valley area. We spend yet another night at Kambachen.
  • DAY 13: Trek from Kambachen to Lhonak (altitude:4780m)  walking time approx 6/7 hrs?Today will be another challenging day and an early start is needed. We trek through rocky fields and large boulders on the hillside along the riverbank and arrive at a waterfall. We then cross a bridge to Ramtang monastery. We then come across a landslide section which we must pass through at a steady pace before descending to the river and finally arriving at Lhonak.
  • DAY 14: Trek from lhonak to Pangpema/Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (altitude:5388m)  Walking time approx 6/7 hrs?We trek along the Kanchenjunga Glacier to spend a night at Pangpema, Kanchenjunga base camp on the north side. We urge you to be careful around the rockier sections as they are prone to landslides. After a short while you reach Pangpema, a flat grassy base camp. Climb a little higher and enjoy the splendor of Jannu, Kanchenjunga and Chang Himal.
  • DAY 15: Trek back to Kambachen (altitude:4050m) walking time approx 6/7 hrs ?We retrace our path to Lhonak and continue down the valley to Ramtang Monastery. The return journey offers a different perspective of the mountains Kanchenjunga, Taple Shikhar, Gimmigela, and Mera Peak among others. Due to the descending nature of this trek we will reach Kambachen by evening and spend the night there.
  • DAY 16: Trek from Kambachen to Ghunsa (altitude:3595m) walking time approx 3/4 hrs ?It’s essentially the reverse of our Day 12 trek. We descend to Ghunsa from Kambachen which means that we get to enjoy the beautiful forests along with a backdrop of impressive mountain scenery. Overnight at Ghunsa
  • DAY 17: Trek from Ghunsa to Sele Le (altitude:4290m) walking time approx 6/7 hrs ?It’s a steep trek upward from Ghunsa to Sele-Le. Upon reaching Sele Le we climb through a dense forest of moss, rhododendron and juniper. Lunch will be served in an appropriate place with the availability of water. We spend the night in Sele Le.
  • DAY 18: Trek from Sele Le to Cheram (altitude:3870m) walking time approx 6/7 hrs? 
  • DAY 19: Trek from Cheram to Ramche (altitude:4580m)and return back to Cheram,walking time approx 4/5 hrs ?
  • DAY 20: Trek from Cheram to Tortong (altitude:2995m) walking time approx 5/6 hrs?We do an uphill trek and enjoy the mesmerizing south side view of Jannu Himal and Makalu (the world’s 6th highest mountain). Today is a strenuous trekking day as we cross several passes- Sinion La, Mirgin La and Sinelapche Bhanjyang. We then make a steep descend to Cheram and spend the night there.We ascend past the snout of the Yalung Glacier and walk alongside the Simbuwa Khola, pass through Lapsang village and reach Ramche. While there, we walk further up the valley or ascend a ridge for a tremendous view of blue sheeps. We then follow the stream before climbing on the moraine top until confronted by Kanchenjunga’s southern face. We walk further ahead for a glimpse of the Jannu Himal. We can even consider continuing to Oktang Monastery. Descend and spend the night at Cheram.
  • DAY 21: Trek from Tortong to Yamphudin (altitude:2080m) walking time approx 6/7 hrs ?As we descend to Tortong we first encounter two trails. One trail is the one we took while descending down from Sele Le. However, we ignore this route and descend further down to the trail alongside the Simbuwa Khola. We enjoy the lush rhododendron forest along the way.
  • DAY 22: Trek from Yamphudin to Yangpang (altitude:1007m) walking time approx 6/7 hrs?While descending from Tortong to Yamphudin we pass through Lasiya Bhanjyang which involves walking up through trees and area of landslides. The terrain changes after every monsoon but by the middle of October it should be stable with a route through. Walking further down we reach the village of Yamphudin, a village inhabited by Sherpas, Limbus and Rais.
  • DAY 23: Trek from Yangpang to Thorpu (altitude:1500m) walking time approx 5/6 hrs ?We descend from Yamphudin, cross the bridge at Samekham and continue following the Kabeli Khola. We pass through Mamankhe which houses the Limbu Museum and Cultural Center. We then cross the bridge over Khaksewa Khola and ascend through the cardamom forest, pass by a few villages and descend further down to Yangpang. Overnight at Yangpang.
  • DAY 24: Trek from Thorpu to Birtamod (altitude:300m) walking time approx 5/6 hrs?Instead of going back to Taplejung we descend down to Thorpu. By opting for Thorpu we will not only be saving us time but will also get to enjoy the landscape of a different route. While descending to Thorpu we pass through some really beautiful terraced villages, where the people are very interested to see you. We spend the night in Thorpu and enjoy the hospitality of the villagers.
  • DAY 25: Drive from Birtamod to Bhadrapur then Fly to Kathmandu (altitude:1400m) ?We are most likely to drive from Thorpu to Birtamod which is a lively Terai town in Eastern Nepal. Along the way you will notice the climate getting warmer with a landscape that is different from the mountains and the hills. The town boasts a number of good accommodation facilities therefore we spend the night in Birtamod.
  • DAY 26: Final departure back to home  ?The drive to Bhadrapur from Birtamod is only of short distance. We fly back to Kathmandu from Bhadrapur Airport. Upon arriving in Kathmandu you can take a rest and relax throughout the day in your hotel or if you are interested in taking souvenirs for your loved ones, you can shop around the tourist area of Thamel. Himalayan Glacier Trekking will be hosting a fantastic celebration dinner for the successful completion of your Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking.

Trip Notes

Nepalese Visa

All foreigners must  have  a  visa. Nepali  embassies and consulates overseas  issue  visas without any difficulties. You can also get on the spot when you arrive in Nepal, either at Kathmandu’s International Airport or at road borders:Nepaljung,Birjung ,raxaul,Sunali ,Kodari .

You will need a passport photo to get visa in Kathmandu Airport or other border places.It costs $25 for a 15 days and $ 40 for a  30 days visa even USD 100 for 90 days. If you’ll be in Nepal more than 15 days you are better off getting a 30 day visa on arrival.

It’s really a good idea to keep a number of passport photos with your passport so they are immediately handy for trekking permits,visa applications and other official documents.

Travel insurance & Emergency Funds

Emergency Fund during your travel, please make sure you have access to at least an additional USD $ 300 or equivalent , as an “Emergency” fund to be used when circumstances outside your control (ex, a natural disaster ) require a change to our planned route also and this is a rare occurrence during the trips.

Travel insurance : Travel insurance is compulsory in order to  participate on any ExGuides Treks Trips. When you travelling with us , you will not to be permitted to join the tour until confirmation of travel insurance has been sighed by ExGuides Tour Guide /Leader, who will take Note of your insurance details. Please when you selecting a travel insurance policy please keep in mind that all  your medical and accident rescue coverage and that we suggest a minimum coverage of USD $ 200,000 for repatriation and emergency ( this is only if you do trekking , peak climbing and expeditions, but if you do  ExGuide tours we require travel insurance only ) we strongly rcommend that the policy also covers personal liability , cancellation , curtailment and loss of your luggage and personal effects.

If you have credit card insurance we require proof of purchase of the your trip (receipt of credit card statement) with credit card in your Name. please do contact your bank for details of their participating insurer the level of  coverage and emergency contact telephone Number.

Exchange money

Exchange money : the official currency of Nepal is Nepali Rupees (NPR). If would like take a ATMs can only be found in kathmandu specially in thamel many ATMs place, pokhara  and bhaktpur. the money exchange facilities are available in kathmandu (thamel , patan mostly tourist place) pokhara (around lake side) , bhaktapur and chitwan( only ourside the park). The before nepal’s government banned the import and export and use of 500 and 1000 indina Ruppe Note in Nepal but now Nepal government allow indian 500 and 1000 import and export. While traveller’s cheques have security advantages exchanging them can be a long process  and commission can be high (up to 10%) and they can be difficult to change in rural areas On weekends and public holidays. If you choose to bring traveller’s cheques please make sure they are a major brand and major currency.

Spending money: all traveller are different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some one travellers may drinks more than others while other travellers like to purchase more souvenirs than participating in optional activities and tipping.

Health and physical condition

Physical condition : trekking has been since long established in Nepal and providing beautiful views in a natural landscape. When you trekking , can be difficult in parts with a lot of uphill and downhill even climbing. But within the capabilities of any healthy person with an established level of walking and fitness. Often stubbornness helps. Walking at your own pace-slow and steady is the way to go being fit or unfit is not the main control here , it is how you deal with mountain altitude. Please never do not RUSH! Go slowly –plod on at a steady pace , pause , sadnting to resting also do not sit too aften it’s harder to get going again and again. Even please don’t care about whether others are ahead ! the walking path is clear , your Guides keep track of where you are . there is plently of times so walk at your pace regardless of how far behind you may think you are. Always remember the sun is intense wear sunscreen and sunglasses it is colder than you think , especially in the wind if you take off layers whilst during walking make sure to put them on again as soon as you stop or are in the shade so , don’t wait to get cold.

Health and safety (Acute mountain sickness AMS)

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) : Though All ExGuides Treks itineraries are designed to allow adepuate enough acclimatization during your trekking in Himalayas , you are likey to feel the effect of altitude sickness (AMS) and oxygen deprivation whlist on the trekking. If left untreated AMS can be life-threatening. We would expect the majority or people to notice the effect of being at high altltude and while most will only feel discomfort , it is not uncommon for small number of people to need extra care  which will we provided by our Guides and local staff. All our ExGuides trips that spend time at high altitude follow our standered altitude safety measures.

A number of medical conditions or medications are can also reduce your body’s ability to acclimatize and thus will affect your performance at high altitude himalayas and make you more susceptible to AMS. If you are so worried about any pre-existing condition (e.g heart problem) or unsure of your physical ability , you have to seek medical advice  prior to booking. You may also wish to discuss medication such as diamox that may help aid acclimatization during your trekking. Please Note that while we  try to assist all our valueable clients in achieving their Goal even Dream. But  there are maybe times your Guides makes the decision to either delay or stop your ascent based on your medical conditions and AMS symptoms on trekking health and safety is most important. All our trips are Running and leading by an experienced , (Expert of tours , trekking and climbing ) English Speaking Local Guides and assistants who will help with the daily logistics.

How to prevent AMS

It’s always good to know that best way to prevent AMS is to ascend gradually . above an altitude of 3,000 meter (10,000 ft) you should not ascend more than 500 meter  in a day. If due to the itinerary this not possible a rest day to acclimatize recommended by ExGuide Treks.keep in mind please that different people will acclimatize at different rates. Acclimatization of often accompanied by fluid loss , so you always need to lots drinks of fluid to remain properly hydrated (at least 3-4 quarts per day. Also urine output should be copious and clear like water. Please take it easy , don’t  over –exert yourself when you first get up to altitude in Himalayas. Light activity during day is better than sleeping because respiration decrease during sleep, exacerbating the symptoms. Always avoid tobacco and alcohol and other depressant drugs including  tranquilizer and sleeping pills . there are depressants futher decrease the respiratory drive during sleeping resulting in a worsening of the symptoms. Please eat well foods and eat a high carbohydrate diet ( more than 70% of your calories from carbohydrates) when you while at altitude. If begin to show symptoms of moderate altitude illness , please do not go higher until symtoms decrease of symptoms are increase , you should go down , down, down!

Preventive Medication

Diamox : Diamox allow you to breathe faster so that you metabolize more oxygen , thereby minimizing the symptoms casue by poor oxygenation. This Diamox is especially helpful to start at night when respiratory drive is decrease. Since takes while for Diamox to have an effect. It’s a advisable to start taking it 24 hrs before you go to altitude and continue for at least five days higher altitude, and this is recommendation of the Himalayan rescue association medical clinic is 125 mg. twice a day one in the morning and one at night.diamox started dose  is 250 mg  , when you take Diamox you may get possible side effects include tingling of the lips and finger tips , blurring of vision and alteration of taste. Please never , and never try to take more than 250 mg Diamox in once. After taking Diamox please drink lots and lots water it does help a lot.

First aid kit

We would like to basic list to cover the more common ailment that affect trekkers. climbing group , expeditions and all trekkers going to isolated areas will need a more  comprehensive kit.

  • Plaster /band-aids
  • Lodine or water filter (optional)
  • Moleskin/second skin for blister
  • Antiseptic ointment for cuts
  • Anti-bacterial throat lozenges (with antiseptis)
  • Aspirin
  • Oral rehydration salts
  • Antibiotic for guardia of similar microbe
  • Diamox 250 mg(for altitude sickness)
  • Sterile syringe set (anti-AIDS precaution)
  • Gel and cleaner

Food and accommodation        

Eating is a big part of traveling. When travelling with ExGuides you experience the local food . while arrival ,we always provide you WELCOME DINNER. While trekking we are usually satying in  so call tea house. A tea houses are the combination of guest houses , restaurant and social hang out. Private rooms (twin basis) are available in most tea houses , except for high altitudes onces where it will be just dormitories. The tea houses are fairly basic. The rooms are spare with twin beds and very little additional furniture. Blankets are generally provided from tea houses. Most bathrooms are shared and toilets can be either squat type or the western version. It depend on trekking region and trekking place.most of tea houses have running water facility and many of them have hot water available for bathing at additional cost. Solar heaters depend on the weather. There is a large dining room-cum-lounge , warmed by the Bukhara stove  and tea house normally no electric lighting in the rooms unless the village has hydroelectric power. Most tea houses got solar lighting in dining.

Tea houses now also have electricity for charging small appliances –mobile phone and cameras and there maybe a small charge amount for this.

During a tea houses trekking you will usually have breakfast and dinner in the tea houses where you stayed and lunch will be eaten at one of the trail side resturants. Every tea houses serves the traditional nepali meals Dal Bhat (rice and lentils) as well as a varity of different food item such as rice , vegetable , noodles , patatos and soup.also different varity food items such as a pizza , pasta and French fries. For soft drink, snacksand beer are available in most of the tea houdes and trails side resturants. And of course always milk tea is served everywhere in tea houses trekking.

Tipping

Tipping at the end of your trip : if you are happy with the services provided a tip- though not compulsory –is appropritate. While it may not be customary to you. it is of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your trips and inspires excellent service and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many destination. We recommend that tips are given to the intended recipient by a member of your group , rather than collected ans passed on by group leader. We suggest following amount are based on local considerations and feedback from our past traveller, hotel porter :NPR 50-100 is adequate for porters that assist you with bags to your room. Restaurant : please check the bill if there’s an addition of 10% service charge , no requirement ofr tipping , otherwise 5-10% of the total bill amount is appropriate.

Your Trip leader/ Guide: throughout your trip you may at times have a local Guide in addition to your leader. We suggest USD 2-3 per person , per day for local Guide(including city tour Guide , jungle Guide , rafting Guide , assistant trekking Guide and your Trip leader/ Guide).

Porter : throughout your trip you may at times have a porter in addition to your leader. We suggest USD $ 2 per person perday. ( normally two client luggage one porter will carry. ) but make sure that your trip leader /Guide should get more tips than porter. If you need any advice please you can always free to ask your trip leader /Guide.
